THE DWINDLING RELEVANCE OF FOSSILS AND OIL IN DRIVING DIGITAL ECONOMY
As the 2023 Climate Change Summit COP28 Dubai, rose with a 'historic' agreement to do away with fossil fuels in order to facilitate global net zero emissions by 2050, the Financial Times of London described the development as "Imperfect progress". This came on the heels of Africa's largest refinery, Dangote taking it's maiden delivery of crude oil to commence production early next year. The atmosphere was filled with energy concerns and the relevance of various sources of energy towards clean energy and the digital economy. It was pertinent also to reminisce that locomotive engines derived energy from coal and fossils until oil was discovered. It was for this reason that oil dominated the 20th century economy. |
The 20th century stands as a pivotal era in human history, marked by unprecedented technological advancements, economic transformations, and geopolitical shifts. One of the most influential factors that shaped the trajectory of the global economy during this period was the discovery, extraction, and utilization of oil. Often referred to as the "black gold," oil emerged as the lifeblood of industrialization, powering economies, fostering technological innovations, and significantly impacting geopolitics.
The Rise of the Oil Industry:
The 20th century witnessed the rapid rise of the oil industry, with its epicenter in the Middle East, North America, and other oil-rich regions. The commercial exploitation of oil began in earnest in the late 19th century, but it was the 20th century that saw its meteoric ascent to prominence. Pioneering figures like John D. Rockefeller and the establishment of major oil companies, such as Standard Oil, laid the foundation for the global dominance of oil.
Industrial Revolution and Economic Transformation:
Oil became a linchpin of the Industrial Revolution, propelling economies into a new era of productivity and efficiency. Its versatility, from fueling machinery to providing raw materials for the burgeoning petrochemical industry, made oil an indispensable resource. The mechanization of industries, transportation, and agriculture owed much of its success to the energy density and portability of oil, which enabled a quantum leap in production capabilities.
Transportation Revolution:
The 20th century marked the era of the automobile, transforming the way people and goods were transported. The internal combustion engine, largely powered by gasoline derived from oil, revolutionized transportation, making it more accessible and efficient. The rise of the automobile industry, epitomized by companies like Ford and General Motors, was a key driver of economic growth and job creation. Additionally, the aviation industry, which heavily relied on aviation fuel derived from oil, took flight, connecting the world in ways previously unimaginable.
War and Geopolitics:
Oil's strategic importance became even more pronounced during times of war. World War I and World War II highlighted the vital role of oil in military operations, as nations sought to secure reliable sources of fuel to sustain their war machines. The geopolitical landscape was reshaped as oil-producing regions gained strategic significance, leading to conflicts and power struggles over control of these valuable resources.
The Petrodollar System:
The latter half of the 20th century witnessed the establishment of the petrodollar system, further cementing the influence of oil in the global economy. As oil transactions were predominantly conducted in U.S. dollars, oil-producing nations amassed vast reserves of dollars, creating a symbiotic relationship between oil exporters and the United States. This system had profound implications for currency markets, trade balances, and global economic stability.
Environmental Concerns and the 21st Century:
While oil undeniably fueled the economic growth of the 20th century, it also brought about environmental challenges. The combustion of fossil fuels released greenhouse gases, contributing to climate change and environmental degradation. The 21st century has seen a growing recognition of the need to transition to more sustainable energy sources, marking a shift away from the heavy dependence on oil that characterized the previous century.
In summary, oil served as the driving force behind the 20th century economy, playing a pivotal role in industrialization, transportation, and geopolitical dynamics. Its impact was transformative, shaping the modern world and leaving an indelible mark on economic, social, and political landscapes. As we navigate the challenges of the 21st century, the legacy of oil continues to influence global affairs, prompting a reevaluation of our dependence on fossil fuels and the quest for sustainable alternatives.
Stay tuned for the panacea by experts.
Energy is undoubtedly the lord of the Manor as far as the economy is concerned.

THE IMPACT OF AI ON PRIVACY AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS
In a few earlier newsletters I dwelt on the fact that by way of introduction AI is a digital citizen who's now always with us and available to help with tasks and solutions.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, revolutionizing the way we live, work, and communicate. While AI offers numerous benefits, it also raises concerns about privacy and intellectual property rights. This essay explores the multifaceted ways in which AI may affect these fundamental aspects of our digital age.
Privacy Concerns
💥 Data Collection and Surveillance AI systems are often used to collect and analyze vast amounts of data. This data can include personal information, online behaviors, and even biometric data. As AI-driven surveillance and data collection methods become more sophisticated, individuals may find their privacy compromised.Governments, corporations, and hackers can use AI to track and monitor individuals without their consent.
💥 Privacy Intrusions AI algorithms can process and interpret personal data, sometimes leading to intrusive and invasive experiences for individuals. Targeted advertising and content recommendations are examples of how AI may encroach on personal privacy by influencing our choices and preferences.
Intellectual Property Rights
💥 Copyright and Plagiarism AI tools have the ability to generate text, music, art, and other creative works. While this can be a boon for content creation, it also raises issues related to copyright and plagiarism. Identifying the true origin of AI-generated content and protecting the intellectual property rights of creators can be challenging.
Trademarks and Brand Protection AI can be employed to imitate brands and trademarks, leading to counterfeit products or misleading advertisements. Protecting brand identity and trademarks in the age of AI requires new strategies and technologies to combat fraud and misrepresentation.
- Ethical and Legal Challenges
💥 Accountability Determining accountability when AI systems infringe on privacy or intellectual property rights can be complex. Is it the developer, the user, or the AI itself that should be held responsible for violations? Legal frameworks need to adapt to address these challenges.
💥 Bias and Discrimination AI algorithms can inherit biases from their training data, potentially leading to discriminatory practices. This can impact both privacy and intellectual property rights, as marginalized groups may face disproportionate harm in these domains.
Conclusion
🎤The rise of artificial intelligence presents both opportunities and challenges in the realms of privacy and intellectual property rights. As we navigate this evolving landscape, it is crucial to strike a balance between innovation and the protection of individual rights.
🎤Policymakers, legal experts, and technology developers must collaborate to establish clear guidelines and regulations that safeguard privacy and intellectual property in an AI-driven world. It is only through such measures that we can harness the full potential of AI while preserving fundamental human rights.

REGULATING AI: A GLOBAL CHALLENGE
Ikechukwu Odoemelam Esq,
Corporate Attorney/Consultant
Since artificial intelligence (AI) became commonplace and applied by anyone
according to need an affordability, the entire world is not only aware but engaged in serious dialogue about how to respond to it.
European Union (EU) Act is the first global effort at regulating artificial intelligence (AI) aside from measures being taken by other sovereign states and political regions.
Apart from being strict, the emphasis of the Act is on the adoption of AI as a safe and environmentally friendly innovation.
More other concerns of the Act include transparency, non-discrimination and traceability. Most importantly the Act insists that the entire AI system should be under human supervision instead of AI.
That sounds reassuring to assuage the fear of possibile endangering human lives and existence by AI.
Other jurisdictions like USA and North America, opted for lessez-ferez approach; abhorring any form of legislative regulations. Instead the existing intellectual property rights: copyright, patent, trademark etc remain sacrosanct.
Whereas the judiciary are strengthened to uphold and protect these rights against any invasion or infringement by AI innovations.
Asian regions, especially China and India introduced strong regulations but they seem to be concerned about the control of AI within their sovereign enclaves.
The approach adopted by South American countries differ significantly from those dealt with already in this discourse.
Rather than embracing EU legislative approach or relying on the judicial powers like USA, they're using corporate governance as guide or minimum standard: the general rules and exceptions.
Some Latin America countries put in place measures to protect minorities from the effect of AI, and collectively punish breaches. Perhaps big entities and individuals are left to confront AI application where their rights are threatened.
African continent appear to be sizing up the latent adverse effects of AI, even though a large proportion of the continent have embraced the use and confidence is growing by the day.
It's not unlikely that when they're ready many of them may adopt legislative approach. Most of them have written constitutions as well as written IP laws.
Overall, the world is aware and awake to the presence of AI. Massive education, collaboration and global corporate governance are needed to harmonize use of AI and regulate it's use.
We're keeping in touch with developments and surely keep you updated. Meanwhile your comments, critique and perspectives are welcome.

IS AI BECOMING A BULL IN CHINA SHOP?
Artificial Intelligence AI is the trending
technological innovation that has been
received with mixed feelings, worries,
fears, anxiety and apprehension are just
few ways to describe how people respond
to AI.
Emotion is at the centre of it; whether it’s
based on loss of control, uncertainties,
values, jobs or privacy concerns.
Are you scarred that AI is becoming the
21st century digital giant that’s becoming
difficult to tame? Well you’re not alone.
Few clues as to where we’re in the radar, if
you stick around.
AI is a technological innovation that was
created by human intelligence which
could become disastrous because of
human frailties.
History is replete with numerous cases of
failed expectations of human intelligence,
even at the peak of it. Think about the
largest ship, Titanic, submersible sub-
marine, aeroplanes, clones etc none of
them has proved error-free.
Have you felt upset, agitated or confused
when you hear ChatGPT, machine
learning, Algorithm, Big Data computer
vision and how viral they’d gone?
Of course some people see the tech
innovations as a battle of values:
replication of superlative order of things
in terms of speed, efficiency and quality.
This battle preceded the discovery of DNA
and robots.
Do you feel concerned about what the
apparent free-for-all use of AI may have
on our environments with the absence of
ethical guidelines? Your guess is as good
as mine.
Sometimes you wonder what the thinking
of global and #corporateleaders, sovereign
states, private sector and individuals are?
Totally overwhelmed perhaps?
On the contrary, there seem to be a
reassuring posture from global leaders,
UNO, UNESCO, WIPO, corporate
conglomerates etc that AI is a digital
companion to be adopted.
Have you wondered what the mission of
AI is all about apart from capitalist end?
It’s unlikely that apprehensions, fears by
individuals or groups can stop the
crescendo of AI trajectory.
Here’s why. A recent survey conducted by
concerned experts revealed among other
things that more than 80% of all
respondents agree that for researches and
routine tasks AI is safe.
The second finding of the survey is that
62% of respondents believe that effective
use of generative AI will separate
successful law firms from unsuccessful
firms within the next xt five year
Put all these together and think of how to
navigate, for numerous people I bet
nothing can be more intimidating and
monumental.
And the most critical aspect?
Where to start.
Have you got opinions, clues and counter perspectives? More of these are expected.

ARTHUR ZULU: MENTOR PER EXCELLENCE
#corporateleaders #mentorship #consultancyservices #author
One of the very important ideas I learned from mentors is not to let someone else's opinions of you become your reality.☺️
AsTony Blair, 🇬🇧 former UK Prime Minister once said: "My teachers used to call me a failure, yet I became Prime Minister".
If you have a mentor that encourages you to soar, 💪 it changes all the negative opinions about you.😀
Such mentor is Arthur Zulu; an accomplished author✍️ and publisher. An online coach and consultant, Arthur partners with 🇺🇲 American consulate in Lagos to present impacting top publishing and creative skills.
It was this publishing skills that brought me into contact with Arthur more than a decade ago.
Aliko Dangote 🇳🇬 said: "In the journey to success tenacity of purpose is supreme"
I have always consulted Arthur whenever I made business decisions.
In 2016 when I launched IDEA WORKSHOP 🎤🎧 training and skills acquisition outfit Arthur on short notice travelled from Lagos to Abia state.
The representatives of Abia state government who attended poured encomiums on Arthur's courage and wisdom.
He gifted government representatives with copies of the workshop materials.
Arthur Zulu is not rich materially; but what he displays in quantum is the mindset of the wealthy.
Dangote recommended: "When you have made it in life, you must give back to those who made you".
As Africa's top industrialist his corporate social responsibility fully illustrated that.
Arthur as an individual has demonstrated that severally in the course of more than a decade ago that he became my mentor.
I appreciate you immensely; may God not stop to bless you.🙏

New thread app @ is an equivalent of Twitter produced by Meta. It's just rivals Twitter in SMS service companies.
Since Wednesday when it debutted it garnered over 10 m subscribers, according to repors. This seems to be indication of success and acceptance by the market.
However, it seems to be coming in phases. At this time, it seem only some countries will be able to access the app.
It's also apparent that not all devices would access the app.
The app operates with existing Instagram accounts and Facebook. Untill you download the app don't give thumb up/down for the app. From the grapevine President Ahmed Tinubu has joined the bandwagon of the early subscribers.
Whatch out for developments.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FROM THE LEADERSHIP
#corporateleaders
Ikechukwu Odoemelam Esq
Section 50(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended prescribe: “There shall be: (a) a President and a Deputy President of the Senate, who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves”
Nominations must consider the rankings of the senators. Certainly the longer and experience their services the more attractive and likely to be nominated.
It's therefore not surprising that Orji Uzor Kalu, South East Godswill Akpabio South-South, were among the leading contenders for the position. Finally, Akpabio won.
As Akpabio becomes President of the 10th Senate expectations are high about his leadership style and priorities on burning issues of the moment.
His eligibility was obvious and was almost taken for granted, having been previously elected to the Red chambers and served as minority leader.
Before that he had served at various leadership positions. He'd be bringing the leadership skills of former student leader, councilor, chairman, governor, and Minister for Nigeria Delta.
In his acceptance speech, he left no one in doubt that about his inclusive leadership style. His loyalty to the President was equally made known.
Some of the burning issues Akpabio-led National Assembly urgently have to tackle through legislation include security, EFCC, economy etc. He acknowledged that the economy requires 'renewal and revitalization'.
He needs to assure Nigerians that he would not repeat the negative version of the erstlwhile Ahmad Lawan-led 9th senate.
Having yearned for good and development-oriented leadership since the return of civil rule in 1999, Nigerians have high leadership expectations from the 10th National Assembly.
